Jamaica Plain

Welcome to Jamaica Plain

Jamaica Plain's Unique Character

Jamaica Plain is a leafy green oasis inside the city of Boston with access to downtown on the MBTA’s orange line. It is difficult to characterize JP in a soundbite as it has many layers based on the diversity of the people who choose to live here. It is culturally, racially, socially, and economically diverse. Its diversity and focus on the community are reflected in the restaurants and businesses in the area as well as the non-profits that work alongside its residents. It is unlike any other neighborhood in the city of Boston.

Its real estate also offers a diverse set of options for the first-time homebuyer, the upsizer, or that buyer downsizing from the suburbs. JP, in a truly unique fashion, has a deep archive of varying architectural styles. There are single families, condominiums, townhouses, Victorian beauties, and more traditional colonials.

Community and Schools

The residents of Jamaica Plain love their neighborhood and are committed to enjoying what it has to offer. There are plentiful arts collectives, political organizing groups, neighborhood associations, non-profit organizations, and many other ways to plug in and meet new people. Jamaica Plain is also home to these wonderful events and organizations:

JP is home to The English High School, one of the first public high schools in America, founded in 1821. Boston's schools are known for their dedicated staff and engaged parent community. Jamaica Plain is served by several Boston Public Schools and private schools serving K-12 and Pre-K students. There are also a number of daycare options across the neighborhood.

Green Space, Food, and Public Transportation

Jamaica Plain is well known for its green space. Minutes from Back Bay, Longwood Medical, Mission Hill, and Brookline the number of places that offer the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors is unprecedented. To name just a few:

Jamaica Plain’s food scene is growing every year and being recognized throughout the city. Enjoy a creative, comforting meal from Brassica in Forest Hills - you won’t be disappointed. Afterward, hit the bar at Dogwood for a drink or walk up Washington Street for some live music at Midway Cafe. Off of the Stony Brook MBTA stop you can enjoy a taco or two to go at Chilacates, authentic Cuban cuisine at El Oriental de Cuba, a full meal with a great beer selection at Canary Square, or a decadent meal at Ten Tables. If you’re looking for a new book or record, check out Tres Gatos, a full-service restaurant, book, and record store. These are just a few of JP’s incredible offerings.

If you’re interested in cooking at home, JP offers a number of local markets to shop. City Feed and Supply, Happy Market & Spirits, and JP’s farmers market all offer small-business shopping for your foodstuffs. JP also has a Whole Foods and a Stop & Shop. Finally, if you’re looking for a cup of coffee or pastry look no further than Third Cliff, ULA, Blue Frog, Tokava, Monumental Market, and Fiore’s Bakery

Adding to the neighborhood's depth and variety, Jamaica Plain is served by a local outpost of Whole Foods, remarkable bakeries like Blue Frog, and Fiore's Bakery.

Public Transportation

Jamaica Plain is served by robus bike lanes, both the orange line and the green line, as well as bus lines. The Orange Line subway runs through Jamaica Plain, stopping at Jackson Square, Stony Brook, Green Street, and Forest Hills. The Needham Line of the commuter rail also stops at Forest Hills Station, which is also a major bus hub. Two major bicycle paths serve Jamaica Plain as well: the Southwest Corridor, which runs from Forest Hills to Back Bay, and a series of paths that run through the Emerald Necklace Parks along Jamaicaway and Riverway. JP is nestled between routes 28 and 9, and by car, it is mainly served by local roads. Route 9 leads east into Boston and west to Interstate 90.
